Calculate Your Container Cost
Find out how much it costs to get a shipping container delivered to you by clicking the button below and entering your postal code. Your delivery rate is calculated by your postal code.
Ground Level Delivery: 4-7 Business Days
We work with professional local haulers to deliver your shipping container. All of our haulers use roll-off trailers, and will place your container directly onto the ground (so you don't need a crane or forklift on your end to unload the container). We'll be in contact within 1 business day of your order with a delivery ETA, and the driver will call you when they're en route that day. Please make sure you've got enough space for delivery.
1-Year Warranty: No Leaks, Guaranteed
We only sell quality used shipping containers, and every container we sell is guaranteed not to leak, to have doors that seal properly, and floors free of holes. Every used shipping container we sell comes with a 1 year warranty that covers the structural integrity of the container. We also offer a 30 day money back guarantee (less trucking costs, including the cost to return the container).
Steel Storage Container Rentals from $189/mo
For customers who would prefer to rent, we offer nationwide storage container rentals starting at $189/mo. Unlike the other guys, we don't add a loss waiver or other charges to your rental. There are no additional fees added to your monthly rental rate when you rent a storage container (please note that there will be a one-time fee for delivery and pick-up, based on your delivery zip code, and that sales tax will be added where applicable).
Shipping Container Conditions & Grades
Used shipping containers come in a wide variety of conditions. The most common are One Trip, Cargo Worthy (CWO), and Wind & Water Tight (WWT). There are also "As Is" Containers, which we do not sell because they are usually damaged, and thus cannot be guaranteed. As well as containers repaired to IICL (Institute of International Container Lessors) standards.
While we don't offer IICL containers as an option, we do sometimes sell IICL condition containers. Our experience has been that containers repaired to IICL standards are in excellent structural condition, but don't look cosmetically different than CWO or WWT containers (and, due to dents often being patched/welded instead of simply pounded out, IICL containers can sometimes look less visually appealing than their wind and water tight or cargo worthy counterparts.
Please Note: All used containers will have rust/dents. No matter the grade, every container we sell is guaranteed to be structurally sound, and comes with our one year warranty.
What Makes Northern Container Sales Different?
We're a Canadian operated company that sells shipping containers across Canada. We're co-owned by our Canadian employee group and Western Container Sales, one of the largest buyers of used shipping containers in North America. We source intermodal containers directly from cargo circulation, and add a wholesale mark-up to our cost and make it simple to buy a shipping container.
How to Buy a Shipping Container:
Choose Your Container Specs
First select the size, condition, and door direction that meet your needs, then add your selections to the cart and checkout in our secure payment portal. Make sure to check out the sample photos before you buy. Your container is guaranteed not to leak, and comes with a 30-day money back guarantee (less trucking costs). Every container we sell is also backed by our one year warranty.
We Source Your Shipping Container
Then we source your shipping containers directly from intermodal cargo circulation. We work directly with the largest intermodal container suppliers, so you avoid paying unnecessary middle-men. After your order is placed, you'll receive a confirmation email. You then get the next container off the stack that meets your criteria. We guarantee the doors, floors and roof (but not the cosmetic condition). Colour cannot be selected.
Delivery: 4-7 Business Days
We'll be in touch within one (1) business day with your delivery date, and the driver will call you when they're en route. If you'd prefer to manage your own shipping, the container will be available for pick-up at the intermodal depot within 2-3 business days. Delivery is optional, and your shipping costs are calculated by postal code at checkout. Please contact us with any questions, we're always happy to help.
Make Sure You're Ready for Delivery
We'll deliver your shipping container on a roll-off trailer, so you won't need a forklift or crane to unload... but we'll need some space to deliver. Check out the information here, and then click the link below to learn more about how shipping container delivery works.
The Trucks are Big
In order for the driver to be able to safely deliver your container, we'll need an additional 18m of space for the truck and trailer on 40ft containers (100' or 30m total to deliver a 40ft container), and we'll need an additional 12m of space for 20ft containers (60' or 18m total to deliver 20ft containers). The truck will be 10' (2.4m) wide, and we'll need an additional 1' (.3m) of space on each side to safely maneuver (12' or 3m wide minimum), and will be 13'6" (4.1m) tall when loaded (and up to 16' or 4.9m high when tipped at delivery). Please make sure you've got enough space to deliver your container, and always feel free to contact us with any questions on your site.
The Trucks are Heavy
We outsource all deliveries to professional heavy duty hauling companies with roll-off trailers. The combined weight of the truck and trailer at delivery can be over 45,000 lbs. (20,000 kg.), so we can't drive on any soft ground on our way to your delivery site.
While we can deliver on dirt surfaces, it's important for the ground to be firm and free of obstacles. If you've scheduled your delivery already and need to push back the delivery date due to rain at your site, please contact us right away (cancellations must be received at least 24 hours prior to your delivery date in order to avoid any dry run fees).
Containers are Next Off Stack
We'll source your container directly from intermodal cargo circulation, and that means you'll get the next container off the stack at the depot. Because the containers are being used for cargo up until they're sold, we guarantee they are wind/water tight, with doors that seal, and floors free of holes. However, we can't guarantee your colour, or the cosmetic condition of the container.
All used shipping containers will have some surface rust and dings and dents (be sure to check out the sample photos before you buy), but we guarantee your container will be structurally sound and every container we sell comes with our 1 year warranty.
Shipping Container Dimensions & Specifications
Shipping containers are held to very specific dimensional standards to ensure they can be safely stacked on top of, and below, any other shipping container in the world. Standard shipping containers are 8' wide (2.44m), and are measured in TEU's (twenty-foot equivalent units). Ocean cargo containers are held to a rigid standard to ensure that there are no issues during shipping. Each intermodal shipping container (sometimes called "conex" containers) must be able to not only stack perfectly on a cargo ship, but also lock into chassis trailers safely and securely stack on rail cars. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) sets the standards for shipping container dimensions (via ISO 668).
More Information About Shipping Containers
The information listed on intermodal shipping container doors is standardized so that the container can be handled at any port in the world. From the manufacturer information on the CSC plate, to the size & capacity information, to the container identification number, everything is standardized on a shipping container. Furthermore, to ensure the same equipment can safely handle the containers anywhere in the world, shipping containers are held to a very specific set of specifications and dimensions.
How Do Steel Storage Containers Compare to PODS?
Compare Northern Container Sales to PODS
The largest nationwide portable storage company is PODS (Portable On Demand Storage). While both PODS and Northern Container Sales offer nationwide portable storage rentals, there are some key differences... Primarily that PODS' containers are smaller, lighter units that are made from fiberglass, aluminum and plastic, and designed to be moved while loaded. In contrast, Western Container Sales rentals are re-purposed used shipping containers (all steel construction, with wood floors over steel cross members). Overall, steel shipping containers are a heavy duty alternative to PODS storage containers.
PODS Will Moved Loaded Containers, We Won't...
While Northern Container Sales offers steel storage containers in sizes up to 40' in length, PODS offers smaller, 8', 12' and 16' storage units with aluminum and plastic exteriors. Steel shipping containers are difficult to load/unload without the heavy equipment found at ports and depots, but PODS units are small enough to be easily managed with light duty lifts. Northern Container Sales does not move loaded units, so if you need your container moved after it's loaded PODS or similar companies might be a better option. However, if you need storage at your location we offer larger, all steel containers. Our cost per square foot is almost always lower, as wel
What Happens When You Fill Out Those "Free Quote" Forms on Other Websites?
You Input Your Contact Information
Usually the websites that you see offering you "Free Shipping Container Quotes" or to "Instantly Compare Storage Container Quotes" from multiple vendors are just lead generators. You might notice that most of the time when you call, nobody answers (if they even have a phone number listed). That's because they don't actually sell containers... they just sell your information.
Your Info is Sold as Sales Leads
The company that you gave your phone number and email to, sells the information as a lead to multiple companies. Sometimes it's a reputable company buying the lead, sometimes it's a less professional operation, sometimes it's a mix (depends on who is buying leads in your market). Nrothern Container Sales doesn't buy 3rd party leads, nor do we sell our customers' information.
Commissioned Salespeople Call You
Whether it's a commissioned sales rep in a call center cubicle, or a sole proprietor, there's a strong chance the person leaving you voicemail messages has their compensation tied to whether or not you buy. Northern Container Sales doesn't believe you can talk anyone into a 9,000-pound steel box... None of our reps earn direct commission on container sales or rentals.
We don't believe you can talk anyone into a container they don't need... And when you contact us the person on the other end will just be focused on helping you, not closing the deal.
Why Don't We Make You Call For a Shipping Container Quote?
We know what a hassle it can be to call for a shipping container quote. Or how annoying it can be to fill out a form on what appears to be a conex container rental site and consequently be bombarded with salespeople from third party companies because your information was sold as a lead. Unlike the big guys, our shipping container prices are posted online. Why do we do this when other companies won't? Simple, we know our prices are fair, and well below what you'd see with our large corporate competitors.
Northern Container Sales will get you a fair price for a used shipping container sourced directly from global intermodal equipment providers, pulled from their inventories at your nearest intermodal depot. Because the containers were recently moving cargo, we know they won't leak and we guarantee it. Check out our current shipping container prices (please note they do change with inventory levels). We also make renting steel storage containers just as easy, with our online rental order form.
